Amputee Patient is Back in Full Swing of Things Thanks to HealthSouth Toms River

Tom O'GradyTOMS RIVER, N.J. – Thanks to the high-quality rehabilitative care received at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Toms River, 63-year-old, Point Pleasant Boro, N.J., resident Ray O’Grady is back to doing the things he loved after not one, but two leg amputations.

O’Grady’s left leg was amputated below the knee in 2004 when he contracted an infection caused by a strain of staph bacteria known as Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) through an open wound that was dissolving his ankle. Then, in 2010, when he was faced with a rebounding infection in his toes on his right leg, doctors gave him the option to remove part of his foot or amputate the entire leg. With less chance of the infection spreading, he made the decision to have his right leg amputated below the knee.

To get him moving again, O’Grady chose HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Toms River for his physical rehabilitation needs so that he could get back to his daily routine and activities. During his time at HealthSouth Toms River, he was also introduced to the Eastern Amputee Golfers Association and First Swing, a golf clinic designed for amputees that incorporates the aid of physical therapists. Because of this, O’Grady has found independence, therapeutic exercise and enjoyment from golfing and now travels around the country to play in tournaments.

“Being an amputee is a state of mind,” remarks O’Grady. “You are limited, but you are not limited to it.”
